IN 'BATTLE READINESS' IN THE MEDITERRANEAN - THE 'CHARLES DE GAULLE'
Filenews 31 August 2020
The French fleet's flagship aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle accompanied by an unknown number of French navy ships and submarines is expected to sail directly into the Eastern Mediterranean, according to French media reports citing information from the French Ministry of Defence.
The "jewel" in the crown of the French navy is sailing in the Mediterranean on an "unspecified mission", according to reports, such as the French lemarin.ouest-france.fr.
Being France's most important strategic weapon, no more details have been announced for security reasons, but as military analysts point out, the departure from the Naval Station of Toulon is made with the aircraft carrier in "battle readiness", i.e. with a full combat load which includes a number of Rafal fighter aircraft, flying radars and strategic armament of maximum range missiles, anti-submarine arsenal as well as the sophisticated electronic detection, targeting and electronic interference systems developed by the French war industry with the special characteristic that there are no countermeasures available to any other country.
The deployment of the French navy in the Eastern Mediterranean at the moment follows recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron that "Turkey understands only by deeds", while Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan at the same time directly threatened Greece and France that they would "pay a heavy price".
